What Niche Marketing is Not

It’s not about trying to sell your product or service to the world at large. In any case you couldn’t afford that kind of multi-million dollar advertising budget. However, with a computer, an Internet connection and a good idea, you can  sell to a smaller client base by finding the right niche.

It’s not about trying to compete. Competition is taken out of the equation when you aren’t out there behind a million other people who are selling the same thing you are selling.

Niche marketing is not about the big picture, it’s about focusing on the small picture and… the smaller the better! Narrowing your niche down to a very specific part of a large market increases your chances of capturing a good  market share of that small part.

The world is huge with  billions of people and you only need a microscopic portion of the population to gain a huge list of potential buyers.

This is important because if your site content is too broad you’ll have difficulty selling your products or services because of too much competition. Or it might be so broad it will confuse people.

The content might be specific such as “Televisions” but large companies already have that market cornered . When you find a niche then your market becomes much more manageable.

Why Niche Marketing ?

Niche Marketing is the last great frontier for small business.Out there in the ‘real’ world, small businesses don’t have a fair chance when competing against giant international corporations.

The advent of the Internet has evened out the odds for small business. The Internet created a real equal opportunity platform for those who are willing to use it.

There are several different ways to make use of niche marketing and succeed. All of these require getting your own domain name and a webhost, developing a blog or web pages (or both) and adding content.

These are just the basics for Internet Marketing in any form. Then there are choices  to be made on building a successful niche marketing site that will provide you with a profit….hopefully a very large profit.

Build a niche content rich blog or web site that will be so interesting it draws potential customers over and over again.

Publish newsletters and ezines that are so full of niche information that people will happily pay for subscriptions.

These are some of the ways which can be used to create a niche marketing blog or website that makes money.

There are two things that all of these methods have in common.

The topic must be one that helps people solve a problem, makes them healthier or happier, or provides them with information that they want or need in some way.

The content of the website, no matter the topic, must be relevant, timely and interesting to people and the blog or website must be easily navigated.

What is Niche Marketing?

In essence, niche marketing is selling a product or service to those who want or need the product the most.

A niche content site is one that targets a particular group of people. For example gardening is a niche; chicken recipes is a niche; motor repair is a niche. Other people would not be interested in  these topics. But, people who are, would definitely  go to your website and probably come back often to check in case you put up new information.

The reality TV show “Duck Dynasty” is a very good example of what a niche is all about. This is a story about the Robertson family who became millionaires by manufacturing and selling duck calls.

When you look at what they do it’s easy to see that they developed their own niche in the broad  duck hunting market. This includes manufacturing and selling guns, decoys,  tent-like “pop-up” blinds, boats, clothing, raising and selling a special breed of dogs, hunting guides and books about duck hunting. And, of course, doing like the Robertson”s did, manufacturing and and marketing top-of-the-line duck calls.

I wonder if they have an affiliate marketing program? Great affiliate profits could be made by someone with an interest in the duck hunting market niche!

You can also have a niche within a niche. Like, for  gardening, there could be a sub-niche on how to get rid of aphids or on how to use the right fertilizers to grow better grapes. These are sub niches.

But it’s important to remember … the narrower you make your niche, you risk having fewer number  of people  coming to your site. But at the same time, these people are more focused which increases your chances of making sales.

Just think about it. If someone really wants to get information on getting rid of dandelions, they are going to have a lot of difficulty finding sites with this type of information. Furthermore, I assume your site has related products that you promote which increases the likelihood of that visitor buying these  products from your site.

Here are some suggestions on how to go about it:

First, try to think of a popular niche that you would like to develop. And if you can’t come up with try Google and check out what people are looking for.

You can also use the Google Keyword Tool that will show popular keywords which you can use. These are keywords that people use when they do searches.

You will need to have at least 50 pages or so of content to make some kind of impact. Write this content using those popular keywords which you found. These keywords will have a better chance of reaching out to people who are looking for information related to your niche.

Then, find a product on your affiliate network(s) that you can promote on your site. Begin by promoting one product first, then add other products as sales start to pick up.

Finally, the Internet isn’t called “The Information Super Highway” for nothing. A person can make a very good living selling nothing but one product on it.
